Ioana's internship 🤓
At Nerds & Company, every intern is more than just an intern – they're uniquely special. But what's it like to experience us, the Nerds, as their chosen internship company? Dive into this blog and uncover the captivating insights and perspectives straight from the interns themselves.
Hi, Ioana! Can you tell us about your assignment?
During my internship, I worked on creating an engaging app based on the existing oZone platform, designing and developing a dashboard for company purposes to increase working transparency, and learning Spline through self-study. For this, I followed the standard design phases. For oZone, creating a design system took the longest, while for the Nerdy Dashboard the user research part was challenging.
What did you learn from your internship?
On a personal level, I gained confidence in my design abilities and realized the importance of a positive vibrant workspace. Professionally, I improved on my design capabilities, mastered Figma, learned new tools like Webflow and Spline and developed comprehensive UI/UX design skills. I improved my time management skills and gained valuable insights into the life of a professional UI/UX designer. I also discovered my preferences for a structured daily routine and a team-based working environment.
How did you experience the culture at Nerds?
The nerds were very great at welcoming me and always eager to help. My supervisor, Boy Kolman, was very insightful and fun to work with. The company values its employees beyond their roles, each nerd is unique and has special skills. The culture is very positive and inclusive, and the attention to detail is beyond imagination. Who would have thought that I would receive my own personalized mug or beanie?!
Why did you choose Nerds & Company?
I chose Nerds & Company because of the positive working culture, vibrant members, and technology enthusiasts, aligning with what I was looking for in an ideal workplace.
What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of the company or your tasks?
The playfulness, the social aspect is very important in a work environment, but not all companies focus on this. Nerds & Company feels alive, through ping-pong battles and board game nights I started to feel like I am working with a group of friends, rather than other employees.
What advice would you give to students when choosing an internship?
Consider other things than what working as someone in a company is about. The websites don’t usually tell you much, look online, on social media, and choose a company about people, not about products and services.
What was the biggest challenge during your internship, and how did you overcome it?
I find myself quite introverted, so one of the biggest challenges was dealing with language barriers and initiating conversations. After a while, with the help of my nice colleagues, I started to adjust to everything, and participating in social events with them gave me subjects to talk about.
What would you say to students hesitant about doing their internship here?
I would encourage them to consider Nerds & Company for their internship. Great environment, even greater people, and if this is not enough, wonderful social activities and random treats, both eatable or drinkable ;)
